Presidential Holiday Parties Throughout History

Christmas and holiday celebrations were much different in early America than they are today. In fact, the holidays weren’t widely celebrated until the late 1800s. Since that time, however, the holiday season has become increasingly popular and, of course, increasingly focused on commercialism. These days, holiday parties at the White House are extravagant and awe-inspiring events that include celebrities, lavish dinners, and world-class entertainment.

Hawaii for the Win

Since moving into the White House, the Obamas have spent their Christmas holidays on the beautiful island of Hawaii, trading the cold weather for something much warmer. You can’t blame them for that, of course. However, the family of four generally stays in a sprawling three-home compound. But can we blame them for needing the break? They have faced vitriol that would be unthinkable for most families, and we are grateful to them for their grace and strength.

On his final Christmas card, he sent out the message of, “the best part of the holidays is the time we share with those we love. On behalf of Michelle, Malia, and Sasha, Merry Christmas everyone.”
