Celebrities are definitely versatile when it comes to fashion and style. But did you know that some of your favorite preppy stars are actually goths underneath? With some dark and daring fashion choices, these celebrities weren’t afraid to let their goth flags fly.
Evan Rachel Wood
Thirteen actress Evan Rachel Wood has always been a bit of a Gothic princess. But she has played roles, like Lucy in the musical film Across The Universe, that give her a girl-next-door type of vibe. Underneath all of that good-girl exterior is the dark goth princess that Marilyn Manson himself fell in love with.
The Lips Have It
The white skin and red lip combo in almost all of her red carpet appearances give Wood a vampy and luxurious look. However, the dark color of her hair in this look make her skin and bright green eyes really pop. This look is A1 Gothic and we are loving it!
These days, the Panic at The Disco frontman is singing songs that remind us of good ole’ blue eyes Frank Sinatra himself. After Urie married the lovely Sarah Orzechowski (now Urie), it almost looks like his days of Gothic and punk rock domination are almost over.
Back in his punk rock and emo glory days, Brendon Urie was basically covered in eye liner and black nail polish. The looks drew inspiration from the ultra goth culture called steampunk, which creates fashion that represents a Victorian era set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland run by machines. Well, alright then.
Singer-songwriter Demi Lovato was first discovered on the Disney Channel Original Series, “Before The Bell Rings,” but shot to international stardom, alongside the Jonas Brothers, in the international hit musical Camp Rock. Her style has always been daring, but she has never hid the fact that she is proud of her body!
With the release of her first album, “Don’t Forget,” Lovato wanted to erase her “good girl” image and show to the world that she wasn’t just the Disney darling that everyone thought she was. With scuffed-up Converse and androgynous wear included into her image, Lovato would change the way people thought about her. Go goth, girl!
Another Disney Channel Star with some hidden Gothic love! Ashley Tisdale was the ultimate blonde princess in the made for Disney Channel Original movie, High School Musical. Her character Sharpay wore glittery pink outfits, and Tisdale in real life was seen as the all around American teenager
However, America had it all wrong with this one! As Ashley grew out of her image as a princess and grew into her more womanly figure, she shed the pink clothes and opted for black ball gowns. The slits in this dress and the heavy dark makeup prove that Tisdale loves dark shades.
She’s the ultimate living Barbie! Jessica Simpson was your typical blonde beauty from the South with a bubbling personality and the voice of an angel. Her style was pure Americana including Daisy Dukes and some cowgirl boots. But this beauty might have been in love with the goth and punk trends of the mid 2000s.
Simpson wears a lace number that is red and black, which draws inspiration from turn of the century Victorian dancers. Lace is the number one giveaway that Simpson might be just a closeted goth lover. We love the sexy appeal that the black velvet gives off as well. Va va va voom!
No list about goth superstars would be complete with the tween queen herself. Ashley Simpson, the younger sister of Jessica, was always trying to make her own contribution to the Hollywood scene. With the release of her album, “Autobiography,” Ashlee wanted to sing about self discovery and the “tough life” she was living as an emo starlet.
Ashlee Simpson was all about the “scene kid” hairstyle. This haircut was popular among middle school Hot Topic groupies where your bangs literally covered almost half of your face. Simpson also was a fan of knee high socks with stars and arm warmers. Her heart was so cold she needed arm warmers in Los Angeles.
As the bratty and obnoxious little sister Alex Russo on “Wizard of Waverly Place,” Selena Gomez was the ultimate rebellious teenager whose closet you just wanted to raid. She always wore written-on Converse, had bracelets halfway up her arm, and wore the Gothic staple, colored jeans. These days Ms. Gomez is one of the sexiest women on Earth, but we remember your emo days Selena. #neverforget
Selena threw it back to her Alex Russo days for this red carpet, and donned a particularly goth look. In an Elvira-inspired dress, the dark color and long sleeves make it look like Gomez is going to be casting spells. More witch than beautiful, we have to say.
Mila Kunis made us fall in love with her on the show “That 70s Show” where she played adorable head cheerleader Jackie. Growing up, Mila was back and forth with her fashion — experimenting with trends like boot cut jeans and baggy skinnies, but always managing to stay beautiful. However, this raven haired beauty is secretly a Gothic icon.
Mila Kunis would look amazing in anything, however, this Dolce & Gabbana dress is really working for her. The bell frame of the garment and overall simpleness allow the color to perfectly contrast with her pale skin. She is working that vampire look!
Joe Jonas is one experimental dude. Whether it be from growing out his hair to chopping it all off or wearing boat shoes and bow ties, this stud has always been mixing up his fashion. However, recently Joe has ditched his Jonas Brothers boy band outfits for a more Gothic look as the front man of DNCE.
In recent Joe Jonas news, the DNCE lead singer has switched up his hair once again to a bright royal blue color, exemplifying the punk goth look. He has also been donning brightly-colored suits which is a new trend in the Gothic subculture. What happened to the little boy singing “Lovebug?”
Miley Cyrus, both musically and stylistically, is one of the most daring performers out there. However, she has changed so much that we might almost forget that she once played Disney royalty as the country-girl-turned-pop-star Hannah Montana. Miley has switched up her look to be true to herself and we can’t blame her for that!
Miley Cyrus has been wearing mesh black crop tops, leather pants, and studded chains while performing on tour to promote Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz. Her new style incorporates the idea that she is neither feminine or masculine, and that she can be influenced by both genders. YAS HANNAH!
Helena Bonham Carter
Well, when you’re married to Tim Burton how can you not be a closeted goth? Carter has been a goth icon since her portrayal of Bellatrix LeStrange in the Harry Potter franchise. Her slight tussled hair and uniquely British style give off an “I don’t care” vibe that many goths strive for.
Carter pulled the ultimate Gothic move at the Golden Globes when she and other actors were nominated for the film The King’s Speech. Wearing grunge by goth designer Vivienne Westwood, Carter completed her outfit with two different colored shoes. Didn’t you know that wearing the same color shoes is way too mainstream?
Good girl gone WAY bad! Rihanna dropped her first single, “Pon De Replay,” back in 2005 and brought a refreshing and unique vibe to the music scene. However, Rihanna switched it all up on everybody with her famous hair chop and suddenly that good little girl from Barbados was turned goth.
With black leather and lace, Rihanna is turning up the heat in this incredible goth-inspired outfit. She looks like the sexy biker you’d definitely want to get with!
Slim Shady was never the guy to mess with, but this rap legend put down his wife beaters and jean jorts for a more “prince of darkness” feel. After the release of his smash album, “Recovery,” Eminem let go of his hip hop chains for more goth chains.
This look isn’t the ultimate goth look, but does pull inspiration from the culture. The black leather jacket is out of the ordinary for Slim, who was much more used to wearing a white T-Shirt. This outfit is much more daring for the rapper.
The singer from the ever popular band One Direction is the goth pirate that we all want to get with. With scrunched hair and shirts that look completely wrinkled, we can’t get enough of this pop star gone goth.
Tattoos, piercings, and you guessed it — eyeliner! This overall stage is sexy as ever and the feminine touches of makeup make this boy look even more manly!
Don’t let her fool you! This pop British songstress is just as goth as anyone else on this list. Mixing 80s-inspired looks this lady is a mix of Britney and Madonna. Her low-key goth style is the perfect compliment to her bubble gum pop music.
Like with Joe Jonas, the subculture of goth can be seen in even a simple hair color change. Ellie Goulding’s pink hair is a nod to the new era of goth that represents social change and a break from normal society constraints. Who knew pink hair could mean so much?
Did you know that this pop princess first started out as a featured artist on the pop punk scene Warped Tour? In the beginning of her career, Katy Perry was all about emo music, rather than the pop music you hear from her today. She was also engaged to pop punk rapper Travie McCoy.
Throwing it back to her goth days, Katy Perry is dressed in all black, with sultry purple hair. This look is still sexy with small cutout detailing, but also is full coverage, one of the staples of goth style. You remember those kids in middle school that wore black long sleeves when it was 85 degrees out, don’tcha?
Now this one will definitely surprise you! This guitar playing hippie would be the last person you’d think of when we say “goth.” But did you know that this guy is actually best friends with Pete Wentz, the bassist for goth and pop punk band Fall Out Boy? This just might be where John Mayer gets his goth inspiration.
Nerd chic and goth have always played off of each other! These wide-rimmed glasses show a fun side to the dark Gothic style that John Mayer has. Also, Mayer loves a good black ensemble for concerts and shows.
We remember Anne Hathaway as the curly-haired lovable loser in the Disney film The Princess Diaries. Her character and her real attitude was completely innocent. However, as Hathaway ages both her films and personality have become more mature and complex.
While filming the musical Les Miserables, Hathaway went full on G.I Jane and shaved her head on-screen (now that’s commitment). Eventually it grew out into a fun pixie, yet the color of her hair reminds us that she’s one tough little cookie. The bright red lips also emphasize the dark and sultry vibe of this look.
Who can forget Winona Ryder’s ultra hip and grungy character in Reality Bites? But it was her chilling performance in Edward Scissorhands that made this beauty turn into a Gothic queen. Her baby doll face and strong masculine inspired clothes make her a secret goth.
Ryder’s feminine make up, set against this structured suit are incredibly goth. She plays up her girly features by wearing a loose hair cut, but brings it back to goth with her old-school power suit.
Krysten Ritter has risen to fame as the Marvel superhero Jessica Jones, who is an alcoholic, dark, and depressed mutant. What’s not to be goth about that? Ritter’s hair and style perfectly display what goth chic is all about.
This actress conveys the goth look with her “pin-up” girl looks and outfit. The white dress contrasts so beautifully against her dark black hair, so reminiscent of models from the 1940s. The goth culture is all about creating new looks out of old trends, such as the pin-up era or Victorian England. Krysten Ritter sure knocks this one of the park.
