The wedding day is quite possibly one of the most important days in a couple’s relationship and with each party trying to make the big day as perfect as possible—especially the bride—things can start to get a little pricey. Perfect weddings do not often come cheap and we’ve gathered a list of weddings to testify to that.
Brahmani Reddy & Rajiv Reddy
Indian businessman and ex-state minister Gali Janardhan Reddy angered his home country after news spread of the extravagant expenses that went into his daughter’s lavish wedding. The controversial wedding cost around $74 million, much to the dismay of critics who were angered because of India’s financial struggles in 2016.
Regardless, Brahmani Reddy married Rajiv Reddy (same last name but no relation until their marriage) in what was dubbed an “obscene display of wealth.” The gold-plated invitations contained LED screens and cost almost $150,000. The wedding also included a lineup of performances from Bollywood stars, as well as Brazilian dancers, 3,000 bouncers, and 300 policemen.
Elizabeth Taylor & Larry Fortensky
Legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor has infamously tied the knot seven times before she met her final husband, Larry Fortensky. Taylor’s final marriage to Fortensky cost a mere $2.5 million, which when adjusted for inflation, would equal around $4 million today. This amount is modest compared to other weddings on this list, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t just as glamorous!
In 1991, Michael Jackson hosted the wedding at his own Neverland Ranch, in addition to acting as father of the bride. Taylor received a $25,000 pale yellow Valentino wedding dress as a gift from the designer. The wedding contained 160 high-profile guests such as Nancy Reagan, Liza Minelli, Eddie Murphy, and other people in the entertainment industry. The wedding had security staffed with at least 100 guards and a former Israeli army officer, but that didn’t stop paparazzi from parachuting into the wedding and landing just 20 feet away from the bride and groom!
Liza Minnelli & David Gest
Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor would find themselves at a wedding again 11 years later, at the wedding of Taylor’s best friend Liza Minnelli. The famously flamboyant actress got married for the fourth time to David Gest in 2002, in a ceremony that cost $3.5 million, or $4.2 million when adjusted for inflation.
The over-the-top wedding included an 850-person guest list that included Donald Trump, Elton John, and Rosie O’Donnell—just to name a few. They reportedly spent an estimated $40,000 on a six-foot, multi-tiered sponge wedding cake, in addition to around $700,000 on flowers. Entertainment was provided by 54 different acts, including Natalie Cole, who sang her father’s “Unforgettable” as Minnelli walked down the aisle.
Chelsea Clinton & Marc Mezvinsky
Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton married her longtime boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky, an investment banker, during the summer of 2010. The wedding was shrouded in secrecy, but that didn’t prevent the media from finding out that the wedding cost an estimated $4.8 million.
The nine-tier cake was reportedly gluten free and cost around $11,000, separate from the additional $750,000 spent on catering. The Clintons also spent $15,000 on high-class toilets and another $600,000 on air-conditioned tents that had glass walls. Of course, what’s a high-profile political wedding without extra security? The Clintons also reportedly paid $200,000 to properly secure the event, which even ordered a no-fly zone over the upstate New York property at which the wedding took place.
Michael Jordan & Yvette Prieto
In 2013, basketball legend Michael Jordan married his girlfriend of five years, Cuban-American model Yvette Prieto. The nuptials took place at Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida, where Donald and Melania Trump had their wedding years prior. Jordan and Prieto’s wedding cost an estimated $10 million and included a star-studded guest list including Scottie Pippen, Tiger Woods, Usher, and Robin Thicke.
The reception venue was rumored to be like a lush garden, candlelit with crystal candelabras and overflowing with white roses, peonies, and tulips. They celebrated with a seven-layer white rum wedding cake and fireworks. The couple requested donations made to the James R. Jordan foundation in lieu of wedding gifts.
Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries
In 2011, Kim Kardashian married NBA player Kris Humphries after just six months of dating. The black-and-white themed wedding was aired in a two-part wedding special for Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Costing around $10 million, the highly publicized event was brimming with celebrity guests, white roses, and plenty of dancing.
Their six-foot tall black and white cake reportedly cost somewhere around $15,000 to $20,000 and the food was catered by chef Wolfgang Puck. Kim had three different Vera Wang dresses for the duration of the night, but it would later turn out to be all in vain, as Kim and Kris’s marriage would infamously last only 72 days and end in a bitter divorce.
Kim Kardashian & Kanye West
After Kim finally broke free from her lengthy and difficult divorce from Humphries, she bounced back and married her current husband, rapper Kanye West, in 2014. Although it was reported to have cost a mere $2.8 million, the real cost was supposedly around $12 million, according to Daily Mail.
The international affair took off in France, where the rehearsal dinner took place at the palace of Versailles. Kim and Kanye then had their guests flown to Florence, Italy for the wedding ceremony and reception. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli sang as Kim walked down the aisle, with a floral backdrop that consisted of around $100,000 worth of flowers. Entertainment was provided by the likes of Lana del Rey and John Legend, while guests noshed on a seven-foot vanilla and berry cake.
Wayne Rooney & Coleen McLoughlin
English footballer (soccer player) met his wife, Coleen McLoughlin, when they were 12 years old and married her after six years of dating since age 16. Their wedding took place at the Abbey of Cervara in Italy and reportedly cost around $15 million by today’s rates (it was reportedly going to cost £5 million in 2008).
Coleen spent at least £85,000 on multiple flights to New York City for dress fittings, ultimately deciding on a £200,000 dress. She also paid £400,000 to book her favorite band, Westlife, to perform at the reception. Spending at least £1 million on pre-wedding celebrations, Rooney reportedly had a budget of £10,000 per guest, because he didn’t want his guests to have to pay for anything.
Petra Ecclestone & James Stunt
British businessman and former chief executive of Formula One Group, Bernie Ecclestone, was less than pleased when he found out that his daughter, Petra, and her mother racked up a wedding bill that cost more than £12 million in 2011, an estimated $18 million by today’s rates.
Petra Ecclestone’s marriage to businessman James Stunt took place at Odescalchi Castle in Rome, which cost £310,000. Entertainment included The Black Eyed Peas, who charged a £1.5 million fee, and DJ David Guetta, who was paid £500,000. Guests sipped on vintage champagne and wine that cost £4,000 per bottle, as they watched acrobatic performances and fireworks displays during the reception.
Vikram Chatwal & Priya Sachdev
Vikram Chatwal is the son of Sant Chatwal, who founded Hampshire Hotels and Resorts and Bombay Palace restaurants. As a result, Vikram has become a successful hotelier, working in the family business, as well as an actor. In 2006, he married Priya Sachdev, who is an investment banker-turned-model/actress.
Their wedding cost a reported $20 million and was held over the course of several days. The festivities included a multi-city tour of India, starting in Bombay and going to Udaipur and New Delhi. Up to 600 guests from more than 26 countries were flown to India for the wedding, including former U.S. president Bill Clinton and spiritual guru Deepak Chopra.
Sanjay Hinduja & Anu Mahtani
Sanjay Hinduja comes from Britain’s wealthiest family, whose fortune was estimated to be £11.9 billion in 2015. Considering their wealth, Hinduja’s marriage to Indian fashion designer Anu Mahtani was one of the most extravagant weddings in India, costing an estimated £15 million, or $23 million.
The 800-person party took place on an island in the middle of a lake in Udaipur. Guests were first chauffeured by luxury BMW’s, which were flown in from Mumbai, and then had to travel to the party island by boat. Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Lopez were flown in and performed in India for the first time, for a fee of £650,000 each.
King Felipe & Queen Letizia of Spain
Prince Felipe of Spain married journalist Letizia Ortiz in 2004, before they took over the monarchy for the country of Spain. Their wedding, which was watched by 100 million viewers worldwide and 25 million viewers from Spain alone, cost an estimated $29 million.
The reception included an almost seven-foot tall cake and over 1,000 bottles of champagne. Because of bombings in Madrid two months prior to the wedding and a bombing at the last royal wedding 98 years prior, they made sure security was extra tight, with 18,000 police and 200 rooftop snipers on the job. Guests included royals and diplomats from all over the world, including Nelson Mandela, the U.K.’s Prince Charles, and Prince Naruhito of Japan.
Andrey Melnichenko & Aleksandra Kokotovic
Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko married former Miss Yugoslavia, Aleksandra Kokotovic, in a Fall 2005 ceremony in France’s Cote d’Azur. The over-the-top wedding was reported to have cost around $30 million and there were rumors that Melnichenko “had a Russian chapel dismantled, shipped and rebuilt in France,” according to Forbes.
Christina Aguilera and Whitney Houston were both hired to perform for the wedding reception and each reportedly charged around $3.6 million. Andrey Melnichenko currently has a net worth of $10.1 billion, ranking 139th on Forbe’s 2016 list of world billionaires. In addition to being Miss Yugoslavia, Aleksandra is also a model and has dabbled in being a pop star.
Angela Yeung & Huang Xiaoming
Actress, singer, and model Angela Yeung—who is known throughout China as Angelababy— married Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming in 2015. The $31 million wedding took place at the Shanghai Exhibition Center in front of 2,000 guests, in addition to being streamed online.
The ceremony included a holographic castle and a ten-foot tall wedding cake that took a month to make, one tier of which was shaped like a carousel. Wedding guests received extravagant gift bags that included mobile phones, flowers, and stained-glass window lights. The bride’s wedding ring alone cost $1.5 million, featuring a five-carat pear-shaped diamond surrounded by other half-carat diamonds.
Prince William & Kate Middleton
The Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton was the talk of the world for the better part of 2011. The highly publicized event cost an estimated $34 million, a majority of which went into security detail. But what else did the cost of the nuptials entail?
600 of the almost 2,000 guests at the ceremony attended a reception luncheon and another 300 guests attended a reception dinner on the day of the wedding. Both receptions together cost around $600,000. The cakes alone were $80,000 total – tradition cream cake for Kate and white fruit cake for William. Finally, $800,000 worth of flowers decorated Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace.
Prince Charles & Princess Diana
Of course, it is arguable that Will and Kate’s wedding wasn’t quite as big as Will’s parent’s wedding in 1981. The royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana was a huge deal and at the time was dubbed a “fairytale wedding” and “wedding of the century.” In 1981, the wedding cost $48 million, which when adjusted for inflation would equal $110 million today.
The newlywed couple hosted 120 guests for a reception breakfast at Buckingham Palace and had 27 wedding cakes made for their special day. One of the main focuses of was Princess Diana’s wedding dress which was then valued at $12,000 and would be worth $41,000 today.
Vanisha Mittal & Amit Bhatia
Vanisha Mittal is the youngest daughter of India’s second richest man, Lakshmi Mittal, who is a steel tycoon based in the United Kingdom. Her 2004 marriage to investment banker Amit Bhatia is labeled as one of the most outrageous weddings in the world, as her father spared no expenses for the couple’s special day, which ended up costing around $60 million.
1,000 guests from all over the world were flown into France, where wedding festivities lasted almost an entire week. An engagement ceremony and dinner were held at the Palace of Versailles and the Jardin des Tuileries, respectively. Chefs from India were flown in just for the occasion. The wedding reception included entertainment from Kylie Minogue, who sang against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower as fireworks went off.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan & Princess Salama
The royal wedding of Charles and Diana wasn’t the only extravagant wedding in 1981. That year, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi married Princess Salama in a wedding that today would cost $100 million. The week-long celebration consisted of the prince visiting every town in the emirate by horseback and feeding all the locals.
A 20,000-seat stadium was built for the ceremonial nuptials and all of Princess Salama’s wedding gifts were brought in on 20 bejeweled camels. There were 50 Arab and African troupes that performed for the Middle Eastern dignitaries, who were flown in on a total of 34 private jets. The wedding held the title for the most expensive wedding of all time in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The Roy Family Wedding
Seemanto Roy married Chandni Toor and Sushanto Roy married Richa Ahuja in a double wedding ceremony that lasted four days in 2004. The Roy brothers are the sons of Subrata Roy, and Indian industrialist of Sahara who has a net worth of over $5 billion.
Around $64 million was spent on each couple, adding up to a total cost of around $128 million for the entire affair. Wedding guests numbered in the tens of thousands and they all had the opportunity to dine on over 100 different types of dishes, ranging from American, Indian, Mongolian, Italian, and Lebanese fare. For entertainment, the Roys hired the British Symphony Orchestra.
Said Gutseriev & Khadija Uzhakhovs
The most expensive wedding on this list was funded by Russian oligarch Mikhail Gutseriev, whose oil ventures have earned him a net worth of $6.2 billion. His son, Said Gutseriev, married dental student Khadija Uzhakhovs in a wedding celebration that cost a whopping $1 billion.
Jennifer Lopez was again hired to perform at these nuptials and was reportedly paid $1 million. Entertainment was also proved by Sting and Enrique Iglesias. The lavish affair was overflowing with floor-to-ceiling fresh floral decorations and guests got to enjoy a nine-tier wedding cake, chauffeur service in Rolls Royces, and a grand display of fireworks.
Prince Abdul Malik and Dayangku Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah Pengiran Haji Bolkiah
In April 2015, the Sultan of Brunei’s son Prince Abdul Malik, 31 married Dayangku Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah Pengiran Haji Bolkiah, 22. The two were wed in a jaw-dropping ceremony which took place in the Sultan’s 1,788-room palace. Leaders and dignitaries from around the world were in attendance at the luxurious event.
The bride and groom both wore gold garments decorated with diamonds, and Bolkiah carried a lavish bouquet made of precious gems. The bride was also adorned in a glittering diamond and ruby tiara with matching necklace, crystal-adorned shoes and anklet, and of course a large diamond ring.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel typically shy away from making headlines for their personal lives. The notoriously private superstars still occasionally treat themselves. The couple kicked off their marriage with a magnificent $6.5 million Italian wedding in 2012.
The intimate wedding was held at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, but just because it was small, doesn’t mean it wasn’t attended by some major stars. Jimmy Fallon, Timbaland and Andy Samberg, as well as Biel’s 7th Heaven co-star Beverley Mitchell, were all in attendance. The most stunning part of the wedding was Biel’s non-tradional wedding dress: a custom, pink-tinged number by Giambattista Valli.
George and Amal Clooney
George Clooney was Hollywood’s most infamous bachelor, but when the movie star decided to settle down, he gave his bride-to-be a wedding fit for a queen. The $4.6 million wedding took place in the romantic city of Venice, Italy, and Clooney fronted the travel bill for all of his guests.
Clooney’s hotel suites cost almost $3 million alone, including a $4,650 per night suite at the Aman Hotel. Amal’s custom Oscar de la Renta gown cost a whopping $380,000 and Clooney’s Giorgio Armani tux was a cool $5,000. The post-wedding brunch cost almost as much as some people spend on their whole wedding at $15,000.
Elton John and David Furnish
Elton John tied the knot with his longtime partner David Furnish right when the United Kingdom legalized same-sex civil unions. The couple spent an estimated $2 million on their 600 guest ceremony at the Windsor’s Guildhall.
Like you’d expect from a star as renowned as Elton John, the wedding was insanely fancy. Guests were treated to $130,000 worth of champagne and caviar. Surprisingly, John’s tux wasn’t insanely elaborate (we’d expect something totally custom-made and bedazzled for John, but that was not the case). The pair only spent $10,000 on designer tuxes for their big day.
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills
In 2002, Paul McCartney and Heather Mills wed in a stunning Indian-style wedding in a luxe castle in Glaslough, Ireland. The ceremony cost an estimated $3 million, yet surprisingly enough, it only cost $40,000 to rent out Castle Leslie.
McCartney pulled out all the stops for his reception (we’d expect nothing less from a Beatle), and included a vegetarian meal, fireworks, dancers and a whopping $145,000 in flowers. Who would have thought renting out a castle would be the cheap part? Wedding guests also got a private Beatles concert when Ringo, George and Paul hit the stage and sang a song McCartney wrote called “Heather.” How sweet?
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas
In 2005, Hollywood stars Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones wed in a wild $1.5 million ceremony that was like something right out of a spy film. The wedding really paid attention to the smaller, finer details like writing their invitations in invisible ink and including holograms throughout the reception.
The ceremony was a massive affair at New York’s Plaza Hotel and included high-profile guests like Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine. It wasn’t surprising that the couple hired 50 cops to guard the Plaza’s doors. Perhaps the most lavish part of the event (besides being married at the iconic Plaza) was Zeta-Jones’ $300,000 diamond tiara and $140,000 Christian Lacroix gown.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
Just because a Hollywood couple ended up divorcing, doesn’t mean we should ignore the fact that they had a totally insane, star-studded wedding. Tom Cruise and Kate Holmes wed in 2006 and threw a $2 million affair at the 15th century Odescalchi Castle outside of Rome.
Destination weddings are pretty pricey, but the couple sprang $900,000 for their guest’s airfare and accommodations. Holmes and Cruise spared absolutely no expense and even ended up spending $180,000 purely on wine! When your guests are people like Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez and David Beckham, do you expect any less?
Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman
Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman met in 2002 while she was recording a solo album in Atlanta. After falling in love during the recording process, Bratman relocated to Los Angeles, and the pair wed in 2005.
This pop star and music producer were a match made in music industry heaven, which is exactly why they had to throw a massive $2 million wedding. Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman had a smaller ceremony, inviting just 150 guests to Napa Valley’s Staglin Family Vineyard. Christina’s gorgeous, form-fitting Christian Lacroix gown cost a whopping $80,000 and the winter-themed reception was dripping with white roses, silver and crystals.
Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar
When a supermodel-turned-movie star and millionaire businessman get together, you can bet the wedding is going to be lavish as all get out. When Elizabeth Hurley married Arun Nayar, the Vice President of the toy company Tyco, in 2007, they spared no expense.
The wedding, which was held at the Suderly Castle in Gloucestershire, literally changed locations for the reception, so it’s not surprising that the couple managed to spend $2.5 million. They flew their guests from Gloucestershire to the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India, spending $300,000 on private jets and $100,000 on accommodations. The bridal suite alone cost a whopping $10,000 a night.
Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault
If you’re marrying a billionaire, $3.5 million seems like a pretty minuscule wedding budget, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the world wasn’t in awe when Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault threw a lavish wedding. The couple got married in a sweet Valentine’s Day ceremony in 2009 at the famous opera house Teatro La Venice in Venice, Italy.
The star-studded event included guests like Bono, Penelope Cruz and Woody Harrelson, who came together to sing a super sweet rendition of “Over the Rainbow” for Hayek. The actress’ wedding gown was a stunning Balenciaga number by Nicholas Ghesquiere. Frankly, we couldn’t think of anything better to wear while marrying a billionaire.
David Beckham and Victoria Adams
David Beckham and Victoria Adams are one of the few celebrity couples who have stood the test of time – but is it really true love that made them last or was it that fact that they started their marriage with an absolutely amazing wedding? The ceremony only cost $800,000, but you’ve got to consider the fact that it was 1999. In 2017, the same affair would have cost over $1.1 million.
The Spice Girl had pretty posh affair (we’d expect nothing less), and sat on a golden throne at the altar. They even paid attention to the tiny details. The couple’s cake was topped with nude figures of the pair, which may seem sort of weird, but when you’re as hot as Victoria and David, why not flaunt it?
Guy Ritchie and Madonna
Leaving it to the reigning queen of pop to have one of the most lavish weddings of all-time. The iconic starlet spent £1.5 million (roughly $1.8 million) on her 2000 wedding to Guy Ritchie. If you adjust the figures for inflation, the couple would have spent $2.6 million if they got married in 2017.
The pair met at a star-studded party hosted by Sting in the summer of 1998 and wed two years later. The wedding was held at a heavily guarded Skibo Castle in Dornoch, Scotland. Of course, match-maker Sting was in attendance, and Ritchie wore a kilt to celebrate his Scottish heritage.
Salome Kintsurashvili and Sargis Karapetyan
When two young adults in their early 20s get married, it’s usually a much more understated affair. Most 23-year-olds don’t have millions of dollars to spend on their big day, unless of course, your father is a famous Russian billionaire.
This was the case for Salome Kintsurashvili and Sargis Karapetyan, who had a $2 million wedding thanks to the groom’s billionaire papa. The bride had three separate wedding dresses. She started in classic, glittery, long-sleeve Elie Saab gown with a floor dusting train, changed into an Alessandra Rich number for the wedding portraits, then donned a traditional Armenian wedding dress for a special dance.
Sean Parker and Alexandra Lenas
Social Media Mogul Sean Parker had a gorgeous, enchanted forest-themed wedding. The affair was rumored to cost $10 million, not including the $2.5 million it took for the California Coastal Commission to let him get married among the redwood trees without having a permit.
The magical ceremony was something out of a Disney fairytale. Guests were handed bunnies to cuddle with (we’ve never heard of using bunnies as wedding props, but okay!). A 20-foot gate was erected in the middle of the forest to create an entrance for guests and every single chair was topped with a white fur rug. All 364 guests wore costumes that were custom-designed by Ngila Dickson, Lord of the Rings’ costume designer. The wedding was basically a nerd’s dream.
Princess Victoria and Daniel Wrestling
This amazing $3 million wedding was fit for a princess – Sweden’s Princess Victoria to be exact. In 2010, the princess married her fitness trainer Daniel Wrestling in what was a major family squabble. Her father, King Carl XVI Gustaf was against the wedding, but she had it anyway.
Princess Victoria’s wedding was considered to be one of the biggest weddings in Europe, with an estimated 250,000 people in attendance. The wedding occurred at Stockholm Cathedral, and the streets were decorated with a vast array of floral arrangements. The wedding was financed half by the Royal Family and half by tax money from the Swedish government, which was a point of contention for many citizens. Hey, at least she looked amazing?
Al-Muhtadee Billah and Sarah Salleh
Regarded as one of the Asia’s most spectacular weddings, Brunei’s Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah wed his teenage princess-to-be at the sultan’ palace in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Sarah Salleh was only 17 years old when she married 30-year-old Billah in a $6 million ceremony.
The wedding had 2,000 guests and a 15 minute fireworks show. Over 100 limousines were available to guests, which included royalty from around the world. Everyone from Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, to Crown Prince Naruhito from Japan and most of the Malaysian royal family came to the sultan’s palace for the event. The couple wore bold blue outfits and sat upon golden thrones, making this truly one of the most luxe weddings in history.
Prince Pavlos & Marie-Chantal Miller
If you want a gorgeous, multi-million dollar wedding, it’s a pretty good idea to marry a prince. Bonus points if the prince happens to live in the gorgeous Mediterranean country of Greece. Marie-Chantal Miller, who allegedly got a £200 million dowry from her father, wed the Grecian prince of her dreams in 1995.
The wedding was held at St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Bayswater, London and cost a whopping $7 million. Among some of the most pricy elements were the 30,000 pink flowers that decorated the cathedral and the over 300 cakes, including the eight-tier wedding cake, for the 1,400 guests. Miller’s dress cost a whopping $233,000.
Prince Albert II and Charlene Wittstock
$65 million is more money than most of us can even comprehend, but it’s no big thing if you happen to be a royal. Prince Albert, the son of Grace Kelly and the sovereign of Monaco, wed Charlene Wittstock, a South African swimmer, in a lavish $65 million wedding in July of 2011.
The couple had two ceremonies, which probably didn’t help cut down on expenses. One, a civil wedding, took place in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The second, a religious ceremony, was held a day later. This wedding was the most expensive to occur in 2011 (and one of the most expensive of all time).
Hind Bint Maktoum and Sheikh Mohammed Rashid al Maktoum
When 17-year-old Hind Bint Maktoum married her first cousin Sheikh Mohammed Rashid al Maktoum, who was 13 year her senior, their wedding ended up breaking a Guinness World Record. The extravagant wedding was held in Dubai in 1979 and cost a whopping $137 million, making it the most expensive wedding in history.
The couple had so many guests that they had to build an entire stadium to seat all 20,000 of them. We’re used to weddings lasting an evening, but this was an all-out bash that lasted for five whole days. A national holiday was declared for the entirety of the event.
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
Before there was Brangelina (and the subsequent divorce), there was the infamous marriage of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. The ’90s lovebirds married in a lavish wedding that cost $1 million, which is about what Jennifer made for filming one episode of Friends. It doesn’t seem like a lot when you put it that way, but it works out to be nearly $1.5 million when you consider the fact that it happened 17 years ago.
Brad’s vision for the wedding was a “zen garden” and he completed the look with 50,000 flowers. There were four bands, a gospel choir and fireworks. When Brad wed Angelina Jolie years later, the couple only spent $4,000 on the entire thing.
Rohan and Roshni Mehta
Rohan Mehta is the son of Indian millionaire Yogesh Mehta, so it’s not surprising that his wedding would be absurdly lavish. The event, which took place in Italy, cost an alleged £14 million ($17.38 million).
Around 500 guests flew out to Florence for the 2015 nuptials and were put up in the best hotels around the city, all on the couple’s dime. Unfortunately, the wedding didn’t go exactly as planned. The couple was supposed to arrive by elephant, an idea that was quickly squashed due to health and safety concerns. That didn’t thwart the couple from having an excellent party, though. They enjoyed watching a number of dancers and musical guests.
Delphine Arnault & Alessandro Vallarino Gancia
Delphine is the daughter of a French luxury goods entrepreneur Bernard Arnault, which makes her the heiress apparent to the Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy empire. Alessandro is an Italian wine tycoon and heir to a dynasty of Italian winemakers. Considering the overwhelming amount of wealth behind the two families, the simple act of tying the knot was bound to be BIG (like, $7 million BIG).
Guests included the likes of Karl Lagerfield and fellow spendthrift bride Elizabeth Hurley. Imagine an event stellar enough for a John Galliano gown and 5,000 white roses. That’s right, it was certainly be a day you’d never forget. However, perhaps the bride and groom would want to, since they ended up divorcing in 2010.
Cathy Tsui & Martin Lee Ka-shing
Yes, the nuptials between Cathy Tsui and Martin Lee Ka-shing were nothing short of impressive. They flew 150 guests from Hong Kong to Sydney—on a private jet nonetheless—but that wasn’t all. The price tag for the wedding could have fed a country. But, you’ve got to consider who they are.
Cathy Tsui is a Chinese former actress who studied at the University College of London. Tsui married Martin Lee Ka-shing, the wealthy son of property developer Lee Siu Gei, who founded Henderson Land Development. Some have compared Tsui and Lee’s wedding to that of Prince William’s marriage to Kate Middleton, calling that royal wedding “frugal” in comparison. So how much did the Sydney-based wedding cost? A whopping $90 million, according to reports.
Tiger Woods & Elin Nordegren
The marriage of Tiger Woods to Elin Nordegren was extravagant to say the least, but then again, he is a famous pro-golfer and she is a beautiful model. The fairy-tale beginning to their marriage took place at the Sandy Lane Resort in Barbados. Woods rented out the entire complex, which included 110 rooms and three golf courses, for the duration of their wedding week.
In order to stave off the paparazzi, Woods also went so far as to rent out the island’s only helicopter charter company. The entire shindig reportedly cost almost $2 million. The divorce, on the other hand, was pretty ugly. It was also significantly more expensive.
Chilly Pasternak and Baby Hope Diamond
In 2012, the union of Chilly Pasternak and Baby Hope Diamond was dubbed the most expensive pet wedding ever by the Guinness Book of World Records. You read that right – pet wedding. Baby Hope is a white Coton de Tulear and was adopted by animal rights activist, Wendy Diamond, who held a competition to find Baby Hope a husband. The winner was a tie-dyed poodle named Chilly from Richmond, Virginia.
The pooches tied the knot at a hotel alongside Central Park in New York City in an affair that included a $5,000 sushi bar and a $15,000 orchestra. Don’t think that this was a waste of funds though, because Wendy Diamond held the event to raise money for the Humane Society of New York. On her site, Diamond writes, “I am not the mother of the bride, since Baby Hope is 56 years old in dog years.” The entire affair cost almost $160,000, which probably amounts to millions in dog money.
Lola & Mugly
Yes, you’d like to think that only royal and celebrity weddings rack up the huge price tags, but sometimes, our love for pets cost us dearly, particularly when that passion runs to the thousands of dollars. Louise Harris and Bev Nicholson wanted to spend a huge sum of money to wed their dogs, Lola and Mugly. After all, it’s a unique experience, right?
In what was probably the inspiration behind Baby Hope and Chilly’s wedding, the 2011 nuptials of Lola, a Yorkshire Terrier, and Mugly, a Chinese Crested, were known as Britain’s most expensive pet wedding. The event was held at a mansion that cost £2,500 to rent out and an additional £4,800 on flowers, decorators, a wedding planner, and security.
Phet and Ploy
Expensive pet weddings are not exclusive to dogs, though. Phet and Ploy were brought together for a cat-tastic wedding beyond what you could possibly imagine and would certainly give the previous dog weddings a run for their money. The two Siamese cats were living in Thailand when their owners threw an extravaganza of pink gaudiness.
The groom arrived to his big day in a Rolls Royce, while the bride opted for a helicopter entrance. Considering how expenisve the wedding was ($28,000), it was relatively small at only 500 guests. But the newlywed felines received over $60,000 in cash and gifts, which were donated to charity, and there was even a $60,000 dowry.
Donald Trump and Melania Knauss
Donald Trump is now one of the most infamous figures in US news and politics, but you probably still remember when he married model Melania Knauss at the Bethesda by the Sea Episcopalian Church in 2005—in a wedding that cost a mere $1 million.
Melania’s dress, which was embellished with hand-stiched crystal rhinestones and pearls, cost $100,000 and took 1,000 hours to make. They even hired floral designer Preston Bailer to manage their wedding and his fees reportedly start at $100,000. Their reception was held in a Versailles-inspired ballroom at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, where guests like the Clintons enjoyed the crooning of singer Billy Joel.
Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola
The marriage between pop diva Mariah Carey and her mentor, Sony Music mogul Tommy Mottola, was nothing short of extravagant. The affair allegedly cost around $500,000, but that was back in the ’90s, so in comparison to today, a wedding of the same grandeur would likely rack up close to a million dollars.
Either way, Mariah’s first wedding might as well have cost that much since it was strikingly similar to that of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. In her Vera Wang dress that included a 10-foot veil and 27-foot train, Mariah was tended by 50 flower girls and serenaded by a boys choir as she walked down the aisle. However, like a lot of other high-profile weddings, this one ended in an even more costly and contentious divorce.
Tori Spelling and Charlie Shanian
In 2004, Tori Spelling married her boyfriend of just over two years, fellow actor Charlie Shanian. Although the wedding was held at her parents Los Angeles mansion, the enite event cost an estimated $1 million. Celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss helped Spelling achieve a ’20s-inspired wedding, that was complete with a Champagne fountain that sat displayed in a rose-covered gazebo.
Wolfgang Puck catered the affair for 350 guests that included the Spelling family’s close friends and much of Tori’s Beverly Hills, 90210 costars. The wedding reportedly went until 2:30 in the morning, at which point guests were serves warm chocolate chip cookies and shots of milk.
Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith
James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan met American journalist Keely Shaye Smith while in Mexico. The pair married in 2001 at Ballintubber Abbey in Ireland, which is almost 800 years old. Inspired by the gown Grace Kelly wore at her wedding, the bride wore a gown by Richard Tyler that cost a reported $60,000 and accessorized with $20,000 earrings.
The ceremony and reception had more than $14,000 flowers that cost the newlyweds $70,000 and a six-tier wedding cake that was modeled after the one at JFK’s wedding to Jackie O. At a total cost of $1.5 million, the wedding was certainly one to remember and is still going strong today.
Eddie Murphy and Nicole Mitchell
Comedian Eddie Murphy wed his first wife Nicole Mitchell in 1993 at New York City’s Plaza Hotel in a wedding that was around $1.5 million. The ceremony supposedly lasted around 16 minutes and when the officiator asked if anyone objected to the nuptials, Murphy turned around and glared at the guests, much to their amusement.
Mitchell’s gown, which reportedly cost around $40,000, featured a 12-foot train and a veil that was embellished with Austrian Pearls and crystals. Over 500 guests consumed $25,000 worth of wedding cake and around 600 bottles of Cristal champagne. Unfortunately, Murphy and Mitchell divorced in 2005 but the couple share five kids together.
Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner
“Like father, like daughter,” all the reports say, since first-daughter Ivanka Trump’s wedding to publishing mogul Jared Kushner cost at least $1 million. The wedding was planned in the short time of three months with the help of designer Preston Bailey, whose fees start at $100,000.
In 2009. the couple wed at the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey. Like many before her, Ivanka enlisted Vera Wang to create her dress, telling brides.com, “I would say I am a traditional/classic bride. This style is translated in my dress and jewelry choice,” which apparently cost her $50,000 and $210,000, respectively.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
Bombshell actress Blake Lively and Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds famously got hitched in a super secret wedding in 2012. The wedding was so secret, that people don’t even know what Lively’s Marchesa-designed dress looked like. Lively and Reynolds tied the knot in front of just 35 guests at Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina, which is famous for being a filming location for the movie, The Notebook.
People speculate that their wedding cost over a million dollars because of their $3,000 cake and two-million-dollar twelve-carat oval diamond wedding ring that was given to Lively. The only thing the couple has shared about their wedding, was their dessert bar that was prominently featured in Martha Stewart Magazine.
Alex Carl and Peter Campbell
Alex Carl is the daughter of wealthy Washington A-listers and she met her husband Peter, whose father owned the building she stayed in when she was studying abroad in South Africa. Their multi-day wedding cost upwards of a million dollars.
This makes sense, considering the entire wedding week included two ceremonies, two receptions, and six parties that took place in both the Hamptons and France, where the family owns a chateau. The wedding probably didn’t cost nearly as much as the legal battle that ensued, as celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss sued the Carls for more that $340,000 in unpaid fees and expenses, plus $1.4 million in damages.
Chelsea Olivia and Glenn Alinskie
She is an Indonesian pop singer and he is an Indonesian actor, so when the two tied the knot at their Catholic wedding, it was surely a huge deal for their home country.
Exchanging vows at the Church of Santa Maria Patron of the Assumption, Olivia and Alinske married in an event that presumably cost well in the milliions of dollars, especially considering their castle shaped wedding cake that was almlost a towering 15 feet! Their wedding was comparable to the wedding of Angelababy and Huang Xiaoming’s wedding, which leads us to believe that Asian superstars really know how to go all out with their nuptials.
Jay Chou and Hannah Quinlivan
They’re household names in Taiwan, so when Jay Chou and Hannah Quinlivan wedding happenings spanned more than three countries, it was certainly an event to be talked about. Chou, who has ventured into Hollywood in films such as The Green Hornet and Now You See Me 2, took his bride to be to Paris, Prague, and Germany just to take their pre-wedding photos!
The ceremony was held at Selby Abbey at North Yorkshire, making the location a popular destination for Asian tourists who are fans of the couple. The expenses amounted to $23 million in New Taiwan dollars, becoming the most extravagant celebrity wedding in Taiwanese history.
Alberto Mugrabi and Colby Jordan
Alberto Mugrabi, an art collector, married Colby Jordan, whose father is a billioniare Chicago businessman, in a 2016 ceremony that cost five million dollars. The pair wed on the coast of the French Riviera at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the South of France.
The newlyweds celebrated with 600 guests from all over the world, including celebrities such as Karlie Kloss, Heidi Klum, Princess Beatrice, Owen Wilson, and even the now-elusive Olsen twins. Despite how costly the nuptials ended up, the bride kept it simple in a Valentino gown that featured polka-dot embroidered sleeves and a full cathedral length veil.
