The World’s Most Eligible Royals & The Salacious Relationships Of Princes And Princesses

Just because you’re a member of a royal family it doesn’t mean life is all caviar and lavish castle living. Many members of royal families have been called out for their salacious relationships, lavish parties, and general troublemaking. Even after getting engaged or married, many royals face cheating scandals, stories of illegitimate children, and other controversies.

Stéphanie’s Second Bodyguard Lover

Stéphanie and Daniel divorced in 1996. Two years later, the princess gave birth to a third child, Camille Marie Kelly Gottlieb. The baby’s father was not listed on the birth certificate. It’s assumed her father is Jean Raymond Gottlieb, who was also one of Stephanie’s bodyguards. Jean was head of security but resigned his position when he and Stephanie became lovers. Since they never married, Camille is not included in the line of succession.

The princess was unable to make the relationship work with her second bodyguard boyfriend. In 2001, with three young children in tow, she ran off with not one, but two men in the circus.

Charlotte Casiraghi’s Much Older Lover

Charlotte is eighth in line to Monaco’s throne. Her mother is Princess Caroline, and her grandmother is the late American actress-turned-Princess Grace Kelly. Charlotte, who is Catholic, fell in love with French comedian-actor Gad Elmaleh, who is Jewish, and 16 years older than her. The couple dated for three years. The pair had one child together but never wed, so their son, Raphaël, is not included in the line of succession to the Monegasque throne.

Charlotte has had many boyfriends over the years. She dated Belgian entrepreneur Felix Winckler and later had a brief relationship with Italian entrepreneur Matteo Maria Caradonna. She also dated gallery owner Alex Dellal.

Mette-Marit’s Surrogate Twins Scandal

In 2012, Mette-Marit made headlines after traveling to India to take care of newborn surrogate twins for a gay couple. Visa problems prevented the princess’ friends (the infants’ two fathers) from arriving at the hospital in time for the birth. Surrogacy is illegal in Norway; however, citizens are allowed to find surrogates in other countries and bring the children back home to Norway.

Mette-Marit’s actions were debated by the country’s citizens, with some supporting her and others disagreeing with her actions. She later said she traveled to India for personal reasons and the trip “was not intended to be a contribution to this debate.”

Runaway Bride Princess Charlene

Charlene Wittstock is a former Olympic swimmer for South Africa who, if rumors are to be believed, nearly didn’t marry Prince Albert II of Monaco. The couple met in 2000, started dating in 2006 and got engaged in 2010. The week prior to their summer 2011 wedding, rumors circulated that Charlene got cold feet and nearly left the prince waiting at the altar.

A French publication claimed that Charlene tried to leave the country because she discovered that he had fathered a third illegitimate child. Police allegedly stopped her at the airport and confiscated her passport. It was reported that she needed “intense convincing” by her fiance and palace officials to stay. Officials denied the “ugly rumors.” The couple went on to have two children: Princess Gabriella and Hereditary Prince Jacques.

The Foot Fetish Of Sarah Ferguson

Sarah Ferguson might have the strangest story on our list. In 1992, cameras caught Ferguson, Duchess of York, with her toes in the mouth of John Bryan, a Texas businessman. She had previously announced her separation from Prince Andrew, but the situation brought the family a lot of unwanted attention. In 2010 she came under fire again after offering an undercover report access to her former prince for a sum of £500,000. In all fairness to the Duchess, it might have been Bryan’s foot fetish.

Prince Andrew Had A Scandal Of His Own

Sarah Ferguson wasn’t the only one in her relationship to have a strange sex scandal. Prince Andrew was accused of having sexual relations with a 17-year-old girl. The underage scandal didn’t end there. A woman claimed that she was being abused by billionaire investor Jeffrey Epstein from 1999 to 2002. She claimed that Epstein, a friend of the prince, ordered her to have relations with the royal family member. Immediately following that claim the palace said no such improper activity had occurred. It should be noted that Epstein is a convicted sex offender.

Prince Andrew Dates An Adult Film Star

If there is one prince who could care less what the public thinks about them it’s Prince Andrew. This member of the royal family went on a Caribbean vacation after serving time in the Falklands. When enjoying some rest and relaxation he was photographed with Koo Stark, an American who previously worked in the adult film business. Citizens in England were shocked and angered but Prince Andrew didn’t appear to pay them any attention. In May 2012, Koo Stark appeared at West London Magistrates Court in connection with an alleged theft, reportedly of a £50,000 painting. Adult film starks and convicted sex offenders? Andrew needs to make some new friends.

And Prince Andrew Once Again…

The legacy of Prince Andrew continues to deteriorate further with the revelation that he also kept some dangerous company. He is known to have befriended the likes of Colonel Gaddafi to Tarek Kaituni, a known gun smuggler, according to the Telegraph. He also liked to take the royal helicopter to close by locations at taxpayer expense, even though a car ride would have been nearly as quick and much more economical. Prince Andrew definitely tops our list as the sleaziest of all the royals in modern times. Sadly, he doesn’t seem to care what his subjects think about this lifestyle. Let them eat cake? The next princess on our list was caught with nude photos…

Princess Margaret’s Naked Photos Were Not With Her Husband

Queen Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret, married photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960. She allegedly carried on many affairs during her marriage to Snowdon. When robbers broke into the Baker Street Branch of Lloyd’s of London, they stole various nude photos of Margaret with a man who was not her husband. The story would later become the premise for the Jason Statham film “The Bank Job.” If we’ve learned one thing about royal families around the world it’s that there is no shortage of affairs.

Prince Faisal al Thunayan Threw Illegal Halloween Parties

Halloween is banned in the Saudi kingdom because of its “un-Islamic” nature. Stores are often monitored by Saudi police who shut down any attempt to sell costumes for the Western holiday celebration. That rule apparently does apply to royal family members. Prince Faisal al Thunayan threw a lavish underground Halloween party in 2009 and more 150 young Saudi men and women attended the party. The private invite-only event served illegal alcohol made from local moonshine and other top-shelf liquor. It was soon determined that the female guests in attendance were actually prostitutes hired for the event. Cocaine and hashish were also provided. This guy is so elusive that we couldn’t find a picture of him.

Prince Saud bin Abdulaziz bin Nasir al Saud Was Beaten To Death

In 2010, Prince Saud bin Abdulaziz bin Nasir al Saud was arrested in London, England after he beat his manservant, Bandar Abdulaziz to death. It was soon discovered that Abdulaziz was not only his servant but also his gay lover. He beat his lover during an alcohol-fueled rage that occurred on Valentine’s day. During his trial, the prince spent most of his time attempting to convince a jury that he was not gay, an offense punishable by death in his home country. He was eventually sentenced to life in prison but was sent back to Saudi Arabia in 2013 as part of a prisoner exchange deal that allowed five Britons to return home.

Rich & Single: Prince Wenzeslaus Dates Victoria’s Secret Models

Prince Wenzeslaus of Liechtenstein is the son of HSH Prince Philip Erasmus of Liechtenstein and Isabelle de L’Arbre de Malander. He was recently hired by the financial firm Dalton Strategic Partnership as a partner. The Prince became a household name after dating Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima. The couple dated from 2003 to 2006.

Gossip columnists loved covering the gorgeous and wealthy couple, and Page Six of the New York Post dubbed him Prince Wence. He is also known as “Prince The Vince.” The Prince is the second in line to the throne of one of Europe’s richest monarchs. And he’s available.

Princess Beatrice Is Still Single After 10 Years

Princess Beatrice has been single for just a few months. She dated Dave Clark for 10 years before they split in the summer of 2016. Friends and family were reportedly shocked by the news. The couple allegedly had several “make or break” talks about their relationship and whether they would get married. Ultimately, they decided to part ways.

It’s been rumored that Prince William thought Clark was “indiscreet” and purposely didn’t invite him to his and Kate’s wedding in 2011. We can’t help but wonder what he meant by indiscreet. Beatrice’s parents are Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah, Duchess of York. She is seventh in line to succeed her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Princess Beatrice Knows How Too Party

As it turns out, Princess Beatrice is no stranger to the party animal lifestyle. Not too long ago, she even sliced open pop star Ed Sheeran’s face with a sword as she was pretending to knight James Blunt at a party. Surely, this wasn’t an accident that happened sober and wasn’t the first drunken mistake she’s ever made either. However, it seems as though this runs in the family, and Beatrice intends to uphold the family tradition of putting a little fun into the life of the royal family. It’s not unusual to see her with a cocktail in her hand, and we look forward to hearing more about her wild side soon.

Secretly Engaged Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie is eighth in line to the British throne and is reportedly secretly engaged. In September 2016 she introduced her boyfriend, Jack Stamp Brooksbank, to the Queen at Balmoral Castle. Just two months later, Eugenie was spotted out and about wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring. The couple met on a ski trip, and he was a waiter at the time.

The pair reportedly wanted to move into the Ivy Cottage in Kensington Palace before officially announcing their news. However, their plans have reportedly stalled because they found some problems in the basement of the cottage and are fighting with the Crown Estate over who is responsible for paying for the renovations.

Princess Theodora Is A Single & Looking Actress

Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark is the daughter of former King Constantine II of Greece and Anne-Marie of Denmark. She is distantly related to Princes William and Harry. She decided to pursue a career in Hollywood so moved to Los Angeles and appeared in several roles under the name Theodora Greece. In 2011, she landed a role on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful.

Theodora told the Greek Reporter in 2015: “I don’t think my background has been either an obstacle or a blessing. I put it aside and focus on the job. People get to know your background eventually, but not right away.

Prince Haji Abdul Azim of Brunei

The Prince of Brunei is 35-years-old and third in line to the throne. He is known as a “ladies man” and a troublemaker. Azim rose to international fame by throwing lavish parties for the likes of Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Sophia Loren, and Joan Collins. Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul told the story of chasing a herd of sheep with Prince Azim before riding a hovercraft around the Prince’s castle before breaking it.

King Of Sweden Carl XVI Gustav

In 2010, a tell-all book claimed King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden, then 64, had a penchant for visiting seedy nightclubs and sleeping with various women in the 1990s. The book also devoted an entire chapter to his alleged one-year affair with Camilla Henemark, who was a member of the pop group Army of Lovers.

The king told the media that he had discussed the incident with family and the queen, saying, “We will turn a page and move on,” adding that the alleged events took place many years ago. The king has been married to Silvia Sommerlath since 1976. They have three children and five grandchildren.

Gustav’s Penchant For ‘Regular Suburban Girls’

Gustav claimed to have “turned a page” on his sordid affairs but that doesn’t stop what occurred throughout his younger years. It was reported that he would ask members of Sapo, the Swedish secret police, to bring him “regular suburban girls” to sleep with. Once the young women arrived he would promise them “anything” if they would sleep with him. His police officers would then “pressure” women to hand over any materials they had which might get their king in trouble.

Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden

Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland is the eldest child and heir apparent of King Carl XVI Gustaf. She is expected to be Sweden’s fourth queen regnant. Victoria got tongues wagging after she started dating a personal trainer named Daniel Westling. He became a target of the press and didn’t enjoy the media attention. Nevertheless, the couple wed.

Victoria later defended Daniel, saying love and companionship were more important than a person’s background and pedigree. The couple has two children: Princess Estelle, who is second-in-line to the Swedish throne, and son Prince Oscar, Duke of Skåne.

King Felipe VI Of Spain’s Bachelor Years

Like many young royals, Felipe spent a good portion of his younger years dating various women, and the Spanish press made sure to cover his escapades. In the early ’90s, he dated Isabel Sartorius, which made headlines because her mother had a cocaine addiction. He also famously dated Norwegian underwear model Eva Sannum.

In 2003, he announced his engagement to Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano. It was a bit of a shock because she was a TV presenter (albeit an award-winning journalist who formerly worked at CNN). She was also a divorcee. The couple has two daughters: Leonor, Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofía.

Prince Carl Philip Of Sweden

Prince Carl Philip confirmed his relationship with Sofia Hellqvist in 2010, causing controversy because she was a former semi-nude glamour model. The couple got engaged in 2014 and wed the following year. It had been rumored Sofia was not a welcome addition to the royal family. The prince later said in an interview that the media was wrong and that his family did accept Sofia as one of their own. He slammed the press for bullying his wife and compared the anguish to what he experienced when he was bullied for having dyslexia

Princess Stéphanie Of Monaco

Stéphanie has had multiple high-profile relationships over the years. In 1986, she met American actor Rob Lowe at the Princess Grace Foundation Gala. They went to clubs together and hung out with stars such as Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck and Robert Wagner. However, Stéphanie’s father, Prince Ranier, was not pleased that his daughter was hooking up with Lowe.

In 1992, Stéphanie started dating her bodyguard, Daniel Ducruet, and the pair had two children out of wedlock: Louis and Pauline. The couple wed in 1995, and the children were subsequently included in the line of succession to the Monegasque throne. However, the marriage didn’t last.

Stéphanie’s Circus Act Affairs

The princess met elephant trainer Franco Knie in 1997 and started an affair with him in 2001, taking along her children, who were aged nine, seven and three, and moving into his circus caravan. Knie’s wife, Claudine, reportedly had a nervous breakdown when she found out about the affair and refused her husband’s request for a divorce. Stephanie and Franco split in 2002, likely because he was still married.

But the princess moved on rather quickly. After returning to Monaco for a short time, in 2003 she married Portuguese acrobat Adans Lopez Peres, who happened to be a member of Knie’s circus ensemble. The couple ended their marriage just nine months later.

Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Crown Prince of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He was named as the hereditary prince of Dubai in 2008. He is famous for his poetry, which often centers on romance, patriotism, and his family.

He publishes his poetry under the name Faz’za, and it’s likely this pastime alone is enough to attract suitors. The Sheikh is also a semi-professional skydiver and has a passion for horse riding. He won the individual gold at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in 2014, team gold in 2012 and individual bronze in 2010. And yes, ladies, he’s single.

Princess Escapee

Princess Madeleine of Sweden ditched her engagement with fiancé Jonas Bergstrom after she learned of a one-night affair he’d been caught in. The traumatized princess ran off for New York City, after reports of her lawyer husband-to-be having a wild fling with Tora Berg, a college student. Berg reported to the NY Daily News that “Had I known he had a girlfriend, I never would have done anything.”

The family has already been mired in wedding drama, as Madeleine’s brother Prince Carl dumped his girlfriend for a topless model. Madeleine is third in line to the Swedish throne.

Playboy Pierre Rainier Stefano Casiraghi

Pierre Casiraghi is the seventh in the line of succession to the Monegasque throne. While he is currently married to Beatrice Borromeo, and they are expecting their first child together, Pierre was quite the playboy in his earlier years. While attending university in Milan, he was linked to multiple women and was often photographed hanging out with models.

In 2012, Casiraghi was involved in a nightclub altercation in New York City. He approached a table where businessman Adam Hock was sitting with three models. The two exchanged words, and Hock reportedly hit Casiraghi and three other men. Hock was charged with eight counts of assault but insisted he was defending himself and Casiraghi was the aggressor.

Princess Anne’s Criminal record

In 2002, The Queen’s only daughter, Princess Anne, became the first senior royal to end up with a criminal record. The Princess Royal had pleaded guilty to a charge that one of her English bull terriers had attacked two children. According to BBC, Princess Anne had to appear in court, pay a fine, pay for the damages, and was charged to keep her dog on a leash at all times and take it to a disciplinary school. Although it may not be the biggest scandal yet, Princess Anne managed to set the bar for the Royal Family having criminal records.

Kate Middleton Was Stabbed In The Back By Camilla

He’s not single anymore but there was a tumultuous time in William’s past. Kate Middleton has proven over the years that she was a very suitable match for Prince William but her relationship started with some alleged tumultuous backstabbing from Camilla. Christopher Andersen, author of a new royal biography of three powerful Windsor women—the Queen, Camilla Parker-Bowles, and Kate Middleton, exposed how Camilla attempted to drive a wedge between William and his future wife. The author made a bold claim that Camilla attempted to end Kate and William’s relationship and even encouraged Prince Charles to urge his son to end the marriage. The couple did break up for a few short weeks but soon realized they couldn’t be apart.

The Tampax Incident

In 1992, after the separation of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, details of a phone conversation between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, now the Duchess of Cornwall came to light. The recorded tapes were called “Camilla-gate” and were published in Australian, German, and parts of the British press. Although the tapes were all-around highly embarrassing, the worst part was when Prince Charles suggested that he wanted to be Camilla’s “Tampax”. Not exactly something you want other people to hear you say. It was revealed in 2008, that their phone lines had been bugged. Bummer.

It appears that members of the Royal Family should be more careful when talking on the phone. Yet another phone conversation scandal happened between Princess Diana and her friend James Gilbey in 1989. During the conversation, which was described as being fairly personal, Gilby repeatedly kept calling Princess Diana ‘squidgy’ which was interpreted as being a pet-name of some kind. An article was release titled “Squidgygate” and Diana later confirmed in a BBC Panorama interview that the conversation did happen, but denied that the couple ever had an affair. She said that “He is a very affectionate person but the implications of that conversation were that we’d had an adulterous relationship was not true.”

Meghan Markle’s Engagement To Prince Harry

Look at this couple! Who could be mad at Prince Harry for landing such a beautiful and talented young woman as his bride? Apparently a lot of people. The “Suits” TV star has been constantly harassed by people on social media. Most of the comments have been directed at her the fact that she is a divorced, biracial American who stars in a salacious TV show. The threats became so bad that Harry said was forced to condemn the “wave of abuse and harassment” his then-girlfriend was facing. “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” a statement said. The publication “Daily Star Online” even went on the offensive, claiming that Harry “could marry into gangster royalty — his new love is from a crime-ridden Los Angeles neighborhood.”

We Can’t Forget Harry’s Past

We love that Prince Harry has matured and is now defending the love of his life, but lest we forget he was once a wild partying playboy. Harry came under fire after admitting he liked to smoke marijuana and then again when he dressed as a Nazi officer for Halloween. He was also caught in his birthday suit at a party in Las Vegas. He may have been a wild child but he eventually joined his country’s armed services and has started to settle down as the years have gone one.

Single Mom Mette-Marit

Princess Mette-Marit is currently married to Crown Prince Haakon, but their engagement caused a bit of a stir among royal watchers because she was a Norwegian commoner and single mother when the pair started dating.

Mette-Marit had a rebellious streak as a teenager and was a divorcee/single mom with a son named Marius Borg Høiby when she and the prince got engaged. The couple wed in 2001 and have two children: Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra and His Highness Prince Sverre Magnus. Mette-Marit was crowned princess of Norway after their wedding. But the Princess has caused a bit of controversy in recent years because of some of her actions.

Prince Charles Was Dating Princess Diana’s Sister!

We have very little bad to say about Princess Diana (more on that in a second) but her former husband is another story. Years before the Prince started dating Diana, he allegedly had a brief stint with the late Princess’ sister, Sarah Spencer, now Lady Sarah McCorquodale. Rumor has it that Prince Charles didn’t like that Diana’s sister liked to gossip about their relationship. He allegedly also loathed her previous alcoholism and her anorexia. Diana’s biographer, Andrew Morton, later said Sarah told him she would note married Charles “if he were the dustman or the King of England.” Ouch.

The Gruesome Twosome

As it turns out, when Prince Andrew originally married Sarah Ferguson (Beatrice’s Mother), it was described as “a breath of fresh air for Buckingham Palace”. However, it wasn’t long until Sarah recruited Princess Di into her shenanigans. The two were known troublemakers, and at one point Princess Di eve wore false comedy bras to a party and dressed up as a policewoman to crash Prince Andrew’s male-only event in 1986. Furthermore, Prince Charles was also famously upset for an incident on the Swiss ski slopes when Princess Di, Fergie, and Prince Andrew attempted to pants him on the mountain. Looks like the royal family has a sense of humor. Ferguson even went on to say that Princess Di would have been “the naughtiest of grandmothers”.

Princess Diana’s Affair

We said there was little bad we could say about Princess Diana but her life wasn’t all rose-colored glasses. The Princess was involved in a five-year affair with cavalry officer James Hewitt. After he was caught attempting to sell love letters Diana had sent him, Hewitt admitted to nearly committing suicide. He also said the disgrace he brought to the royal family and his country nearly led to his life-taking attempt. He eventually left the country to start a new life in Marbella, Spain.

Not all princes and princesses have lived lives of controversy. Next up we have some of the most eligible single members of royal families. They live amazing lives and they are still looking for that special someone.

Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana of Thailand

The beautiful Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana is the only daughter of Thailand’s Crown Prince Maha Vajralongkorn. She is intelligent, educated, and talented in addition to being lovely. She received a Fine Arts degree in fashion design from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

Sirivannavari is an accomplished badminton player and has a tournament named after herself. She is also a fashion designer and “developed her eponymous line and emerged as one of the most dedicated design enthusiasts in Paris,” according to Vogue. She’s usually seen wearing hot designer looks when she’s out and about, with Chanel and Dior being some of her favorites. She keeps her dating life pretty private, but it seems that she has a beef with another royal on this list – Princess Beatrice snubbed her majorly at a fashion show they both attended.

Billionaire (& Single) Prince Albert

Imagine being listed as the world’s youngest billionaire at the age of eight? That’s exactly what happened to Albert Maria Lamoral Miguel Johannes Gabriel, 12th Prince of Thurn and Taxis. His father, Johannes, 11th Prince of Thurn and Taxis, died in 1990 and left Albert his $3 billion fortune. The German aristocrat served in the military before studying economics and theology at the University of Edinburgh. He is a businessman and race car driver and currently lives in his family’s castle in Bulgaria. He is one of the descendants of King Miguel I of Portugal and is related to several reigning hereditary heads of state in Europe.

Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark

Prince Philippos was born to King Constantine II of Greece and Queen Anne-Marie in 1986, yet is a prince in title only. As it turns out, the Greek monarchy was abolished and his father King Constantine II was deposed in 1973. Because of this, he has no claim to really anything since there is no longer a monarchy. Possibly because of this reason, he is extremely shy and tries to stay out of the spotlight as much as possible. However, you would still think that some women would be attracted to him as well as his title as prince.

Princess Elisabeth von Thurn and Taxis

Princess Elisabeth comes from the former German Princely House of Thurn and Taxis, which is now one of the wealthiest families in Germany. However, she doesn’t seem to need her family’s money to be successful, because she already is. Princess Elisabeth is based in London and has been the style editor for Vogue magazine and goes by her nickname TNT. Along with her work for Vogue, she also has contributed pieces of art and fashion for other magazines as well as written on religion for the Vatican magazine. She sounds like a pretty good catch to us!

Princess Maria Laura of Belgium is a young princess that has made very few public appearances. She studied Chinese in college and then went to live in China as part of her study project, which didn’t allow for many press opportunities. That’s not the only other language she knows, however. She is fluent in French, Dutch, German, and English, and is the seventh in line to the throne. All of those languages must make her a pretty eligible bachelorette since she can marry from a handful of different countries. That also might spice things up a bit in the royal family line.

Prince Joachim of Belgium

The 25-year-old Archduke of Astra-Este is the younger son and third child of Lorenz, Archduke of Astra-Este and Princess Astrid of Belgium. has kept a low-profile for most of his life. At the moment, he is the ninth in line to the Belgian throne and has studied in England as well as Milan. You won’t be marrying into a massive fortune with this 27-year-old looker but he makes up for it with an impressive education from Eton and Keble, Oxford where he studied both French and German. He used to live a high-flying lifestyle but converted to Catholicism and stopped partying his nights away. Lord Downpatrick sounds primed to settle down and start a family if that’s what you’re looking for at this stage in your life.

King Edward VIII Abdicated His Throne To Marry The Love Of His Life

Let’s drop the negative sex scandals for a moment and talk about true love. When Edward VIII chose to marry Wallis Simpson he was giving up the throne. Less than a year into his reign, in 1936, Edward, who was said to loathe royal life, chose to abdicate his throne and marry Simpson. Simpson was divorced twice before their marriage and the church forbade their union. They were given the titles of Duke and Duchess of Windsor but shut out of the royal family. They remained happily married until Edward’s death in 1972.
