The Baby Trees of Indonesia
Don’t be misled, that tree is a grave. In a remote part of Indonesia, Tana Toraja, villagers have a different type of burial ritual. If a baby dies before they’ve started teething, the mother hollows out a hole in a tree trunk and puts the infant inside.
They believe the corpses will be absorbed into nature and that the wind takes their soul. The holes are sealed over with palm fibers and the tree heals itself over time.
