Uber is a transportation company that allows users with smart phones to submit requests to get from one place to another. This may sound like a normal and innovative service to some folks, but Uber has caught a lot of flak due to the fact that the drivers are not ordinary taxi drivers and are somewhat autonomous when it comes to driving people to and fro. There have been a lot of bizarre stories on the part of the drivers, which includes but are not limited to kidnapping, fighting, and sexual harassment. Have a look at the following incidents which will make you think twice about using Uber the next time you need a ride.
A Driver Holds a Woman’s Phone Ransom
This has got to be one of the most bizarre things to ever come along. Some people will do anything when it comes to being cruel.
A certain lady used the Uber service and just happened to leave her phone in a particular Uber driver’s car. This lady is like many people as some people may lose their phone due to large pockets or maybe just being distracted and paying attention to something else. This lady contacted this Uber driver, and the driver said that he would give her the phone back if she would pay him $500. Uber stepped in and deactivated the driver’s account and would only activate it when the driver returned the phone. The lady tried to meet the driver, but the driver never returned the phone. The lady was never reimbursed by Uber for her phone.
Sexual Harassment and Uber Passengers
There is a thing known as #UberGate that has been floating around the net for some time. You may be wondering why is there a UbeGate hashtag. This is due in part to the complaints of harassment that occurs with women who use the Uber service.
Although there are many stories, here is a story in particular which came from an anonymous customer, “One time I took an Uber home after having a really rough night and was upset in the car and may or may not have been crying because my roommate ditched me for a guy. The driver was trying to make me feel better and was saying nice things to me. When he got to my apartment he got out of the car and told me he was interested in me and wanted to come in my apartment. Needless to say, I peaced out of that situation but it was super creepy and made me uncomfortable, especially because I was alone with him at 3 AM!”
Olivia Nuzzi Gets Harassed by an Uber Driver
Olivia Nuzzi is a writer for the Daily Beast. The Daily Beast is a new reporting site and also an opinion site that has strong progressive liberal political views. Olivia Nuzzi just happened to take a chance on using Uber and this is what happened to her when she used their services.
Olivia Nuzzi was just riding along in an Uber vehicle when the driver who was driving her around divulged to her that he had taken pictures of her. These pictures were very personal. Olivia Nuzzi reported this to Uber, and the driver was fired. The driver then started harassing her and her employers at the Daily Beast.
There Is a Price Tag on Safety
You have seen several incidents with Uber drivers and their passengers so far. A person should expect to be safe in a commute from one place to another. Is it the customer’s responsibility to ensure their own safety? The safety of a customer should be insured by a company itself. This may not be the case with Uber.
Uber has a response to all of the negative attention it receives due to their driver’s incompetence. Uber feels that it is the customer’s responsibility to ensure their safety and that a safety fee should be added to every ride so that Uber can conduct background checks. Is this insane or what?
Never Ride Uber When You are Intoxicated
With all of the stigma associated with Uber, this is one of the most bizarre stories dealing with Uber. Drinking and driving is one thing when a person gets behind the wheel drunk, but what happens when the passenger is intoxicated and the driver is not intoxicated?
A certain lady in Los Angeles used Uber when she got drunk. The woman was hammered to the degree that she could not tell the Uber driver where she lived. The driver allegedly took the lady to the Panorama Motel, where the woman woke up and found herself being touched by the driver. The driver was discharged because of this incident.
Uber Dropped the Ball on an Offender
Uber has gone from wanting customers to shell out money so that they can conduct background checks to having background checks and still hiring offenders. This is another one of those off-the-wall stories involving Uber and their drivers.
In the summer of 2016, a man by the name of Ronald Deluca was hired by Uber to be a driver. Off the bat, Ronald Deluca did not have a valid driver’s license or even insurance. He also has a criminal record. He has committed crimes of a sexual nature and he is a level two offender of these types of crimes. Fox 25 news exposed Uber for hiring Deluca. After Deluca was taken to court, it was found that he still had an active Uber account.
A Little Over Exposure is Never Good
The craziness never seems to end when it comes to hiring an Uber driver. Uber may yet hold a record for hiring people with records. Here is yet another bizarre story involving Uber and its drivers.
ABC 7 came out with a story in which Adam Stevenson was hired to be an Uber driver in Chicago, Illinois. Adam Stevenson had a lot of crimes under his belt and a lot of traffic violations to go along with his criminal repertoire. His downfall came about when a female passenger was subject to his “exposing” himself to her. It was found that Stevenson had been arrested for running red lights, battery, and possession of cannabis.
Uber Driver Hits on Passenger in a Literal Sense
This particular story is about an incident in which an Uber driver hit on a passenger. The passenger was hit on in a literal sense of the word.
In September 2014, two people from San Francisco needed a ride. These two individuals got a ride with Uber driver Patrick Karajah. The individuals and Patrick Karajah had a dispute about the route they were traveling on. An argument ensued and the passengers got out of the car. Patrick Karajah got out as one of the passengers got out and hit a passenger with a hammer on the head and then drove away. Patrick Karajah was later arrested and then released.
Uber Drivers vs Taxi Drivers: Who Will Win?
There seemed to be a battle brewing over in France and Toronto. This was not a typical battle, but a battle of drivers. This occurred sometime in 2015, and it was the battle between Uber drivers and taxi drivers.
This may sound silly, but in 2015 there were taxi drivers in the country of France who did not particularly care for Uber drivers. These taxi drivers would insult and attack these Uber drivers. This also happened in Toronto in 2015. Why was this happening? Very simple: Uber drivers took away taxi customers, and no customers equaled no money for taxi companies.
The Kalamazoo Shooting of 2016
This story is of the most serious of nature. A lot of the stories so far have been downright disgusting and reprehensible, but this is a story that is very serious.
Back in February of 2016, a man by the name of Timothy Dalton was connected with a shooting spree. Timothy Dalton was a driver with Uber and he was accused of going on a shooting spree in which six people were killed and two others were injured at a car dealership, a housing complex, and a restaurant. Timothy Dalton then picked up some passengers and was behaving erratically. Dalton was later arrested and charged with murder. Dalton apparently suffered from depression which may have been the cause of his rampage.
Harley Quinn Almost Got Kidnapped
Harley Quinn Smith is an actress who was actually named after the Harley Quinn character of the Suicide Squad fame. She is the daughter of producer and comic book writer Kevin Smith. Poor little Harley Quinn almost ended up getting kidnapped because of an amateurish prank pulled by some people pretending to be Uber drivers.
In February 2016, People magazine reported that Harley Quinn was standing outside of a Starbucks restaurant. She was waiting for her Uber, and all of a sudden a beige car with an Uber sign drove up to her with two guys in it. The guys said they were Uber drivers and they told her to “Get in the car.” Harley Quinn asked these guys who they were going to pick up, but they could not say because they did not have the Uber app on their phones. Harley Quinn went to Instagram later and said these guys were “disgusting.”
A Doctor Attacks an Uber Driver
So far we have seen the outrageous acts of Uber drivers and the crimes they have committed, but let’s look at the other side in which the passenger flips and the Uber driver is now the victim.
This occurred with a lady by the name of Anjali Ramkissoon. Anjali, or rather, Dr. Anjali Ramkissoon, is a neurologist who is based in Miami. For a doctor who specializes in headaches, she happened to give an Uber driver a headache by attacking him and demanding that he give her a ride. Someone else had booked a ride with the Uber driver, so Dr. Ramkissoon could not have used the service anyway. She scratched the driver and yelled at him as well and the whole thing was recorded on cell phone.
“Get Out of My Car Now”
Some individuals reach a boiling point. This may not have anything to do with you, or does it? There is a video of an Uber driver who loses his cool and takes it out on an unfortunate woman who just happened to be pregnant.
An Uber driver arrived at a hospital in California a few years ago with a passenger. The passenger was a woman who was pregnant at the time. Looking at the video, it seems like the driver is upset with the woman and tells her repeatedly to, “Get out of my car now.” The woman remained calm through the man’s tirade. Someone helped the woman to the emergency room as they walked by seeing this melee. The driver was suspended afterward.
A Passenger Gets Dropped Off, Then the Driver Goes to Her House and Burglarizes It
You would think that after being dropped off at your destination, you would be safe and your house would more than likely be safe. You would also expect a driver who dropped you off to continue picking up customers and doing their job.
This was not the case in 2015 when Gerald Montgomery, an UberX driver, dropped off a lady at the Denver International Airport. Instead of minding his own business, Gerald Montgomery goes to the woman’s house as she boards the plane and decides to steal her things. Luckily, the woman had a roommate and caught Gerald Montgomery stealing from the house. The police were called and Montgomery was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary.
No Burping is Allowed During the Trip
Here is yet another insane story involving an Uber driver and a passenger. This one has to go down in the record books as being one of the most outlandish stories to come along in a long time when it comes to Uber as a whole.
A certain gentleman got a ride with the Uber service. During this ride, the passenger burped. This seems normal, as many people burp. For no reason at all, the Uber driver then assaulted the passenger for burping. The passenger excused himself when he burped, but the Uber driver was not having it. The driver then went on a profanity and homophobic-laced verbal attack against the passenger before attacking the man. The driver was let go afterwards.
Canceling Uber Rides Can Have Consequences
In the United Kingdom some time ago, a lady by the name of Anna Kealey was enjoying a weekend with her friends. She went out for brunch on a Sunday afternoon with her friends. Afterward, she booked a ride with Uber. A few minutes later, Anna Kealey made a grave mistake by canceling the Uber service. Anna Kealey then decided to walk home because she had some feelings of anxiety instead of using Uber. This is where the story gets interesting.
A few days later Kealey listened to a message on her voicemail. She thought it was a joke at first, but then she realized that it was the driver that she canceled. This driver called Kealey an “idiot” and also said added, “Do that again, and I’ll cut your neck.” Kealey filed a police report and went to Twitter expressing her outrage over this incident.
A Woman Ends Up Being Kidnapped by an Uber Driver
Uber seems to attract the most outrageous people when it comes to choosing drivers. Such is the case with an Uber driver who came from Los Angeles.
A female passenger needed a ride home in Los Angeles. The passenger was picked up by an Uber driver. Instead of the Uber driver taking the lady home, this Uber driver decided to drive twenty miles away with this female passenger. The driver took the lady to an empty parking lot. The driver locked the doors of the vehicle as the lady screamed and protested that she be released. This went on for two hours. The woman caused so much of a commotion that the driver took the lady back to the original place that he picked her up. Uber apologized for this incident and only gave the woman part of her money back.
A Cruel Uber Driver Tells a Lady “You Deserve Cancer
Alexandra Craigle is a woman with cancer. She had to have treatments in order to keep the cancer that she had under control. She just happened to be undergoing one of her many radiation treatments at a medical facility in New York. After her procedure was done, Alexandra Craigle decided to use Uber.
As with the story from earlier, Craigle decided to cancel her ride. The Uber driver, just as with the story above, did not like this and then got angry and decided to take his frustrations out on Craigle. He left a voicemail message going off on the woman and went on to say, “You deserve cancer.”

The man was then pushed down to the ground as the assailants drove away. The assailants were captured shortly thereafter.

It was also discovered that Gutierrez had been arrested four times prior to this incident for DUI.
